The Area
Moors, coast, market towns and one of England’s great cities, all within an easy drive of the front door.
England’s largest county, and arguably its most varied, eight hundred square miles of national park on one side, ninety miles of coastline on the other, and a Roman city in between.
The estate sits near the middle of it. What follows is not a list of everything, but the handful of places we send guests to again and again.
North York Moors National Park
Eight hundred square miles of heather moorland, hidden dales and some of the darkest skies in England. Walk it, cycle it, drive its empty lanes, or simply watch the light move across it, it begins where the estate ends.
York
Two thousand years of history in a single walkable city, the Minster, the medieval Shambles, independent shops and museums, and restaurants worth the drive alone. An easy half day, or a full one if the weather turns.
Whitby & the coast
A harbour town under a cliff-top abbey, fish and chips worth queueing for, and the wide sands of Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay a little further along.
Helmsley & the market towns
A handsome square, castle ruins and a walled garden, and the neighbouring towns of Thirsk, Pickering and Malton, the last of which calls itself Yorkshire's food capital and rather earns it.
A county that eats extraordinarily well.
